Things to do in Big Sky, Montana
Montana is well known for its majestic mountain views and clear skies, and this is particularly true of Big Sky, a town in the southwest part of the state which is cozily nestled in among the peaks of the Madison Range. Here are some of the best attractions and things to do in that area.
Visit Yellowstone National Park
Everyone is familiar with Old Faithful, the Yellowstone geyser that erupts periodically and issues a warm spray that delights tourists, but there are loads of other geysers, bubbling mud pots, and spectacular scenery to be found here. The wildlife that roams the park is just as impressive, and there are tons of photo opportunities everywhere. If you’re a fitness enthusiast, you may want to hike the park on foot, so you don’t miss a thing.
Have a stay at Big Sky Resort
Big Sky Resort is the main ski venue in the region, and it is well worth a visit just to experience these slopes. You’ll need to dress warmly of course, because it can get pretty cold in wintertime Montana, but you’ll be able to warm up afterward at the lodge with a warm beverage and dinner. There are also quite a few entertainment options available at the Resort, including zip-lining, fishing, archery, rock-climbing, and even a trip to the mountain summit.
Horseback riding
Horseback riding is a main activity of this area, and it’s a big part of the region’s culture. You can learn a lot about Big Sky by staying at a ranch and taking one or more horseback rides around the area, especially when escorted by a knowledgeable guide. It’s a great way to get a keen appreciation of nature as you’re riding along, and it’s a laid back way of seeing what Big Sky has to offer.
Do some star-gazing
With very little light pollution, Big Sky has some of the clearest skies to be found anywhere in the country, and that makes for great star-gazing. You’ll marvel at the sky full of stars, many that you’ve never seen before. There are lots of guides available who can identify those stars and constellations for you, so you’ll know what you’re looking at. Just relax and appreciate the wonder of it all, as only the Big Sky country can provide for you.
